What's new in March at Wild Books

Unlike other book distributors and resalers 100% of the profit from the Long Island based Wild Books goes to environmental groups that have educational outreach projects here on Long Island.  In these difficult financial times, it is more important to do what we can to help support the activities that are important to us all.  Wild Books helps in a small way to serve those needs.  Wild Books is your source for the best new titles in natural science and the environment.  Wild Books is a part of the Long Island Seed Project and distributed by an all volunteer staff.

Wild Books is proud to announce a new release:  "Sunrise Fire".  We appreciate a good book, especially those that feature environmental topics and are pleased to be distributing this exciting adventure story that takes place on Long Island, New York.

The story begins with our main character, now a young teen named Sandy experiencing the Sunrise Fire, the largest wildfire in Long Island's history as a youngster at her naturalist mother's side.  Sandy learns about the Pine Barrens from her mother who is frustrated that her research on fire ecology has largely been ignored over the years.  Like her mother, Sandy also has an interest in wildfire;  but she doesn't want to study fires, she wants to fight fires on Long Island.  She and her high school friends join the local fire department as junior firefighters and attempt to learn the necessary skills.  There, they learn fire safety and they learn much more about themselves, friendship, leadership and self respect.

Front and Back Covers

"Sunrise Fire" is a technically accurate account unique in it's vision: it's a story of forestry conservation;  it is also about firefighting and the problem of protecting life, property, and the environment in the surrounding fire prone communities.  Finally, and most important; it is a story of five fictional teen characters brought to life.

Sandy, a blond and a bit of a dreamer, is totally into forest fires, wildlife and hanging out with her friends. Her mom wants to send her out West to train with the forest service and become a real firefighter.  Kim has firey red hair, she is into house fires;  but her father, the local fire captain is not at all pleased that she has joined the department.   The glamor girl, Tina, well, she's into the guys. She doesn't take anything seriously except her attire until the day she realizes she must face her own demon- fire!   Billy is coming to terms with what it takes to be a good leader despite his good looks and his best friend who is Jim, the school nerd.   Jim's reckless outbursts pit him against conflicting firefighting values, between his friends, the firehouse, and his uncle who leads the wildland fire academy.

Chapter 1. page 3-4

"Sunrise Fire" was written for junior-senior high school kids and published by a sister Long Island non-profit organization that we admire,  "Quality Parks".

Mindy Block is founder of Quality Parks, is a resident of Suffolk County, NY and a naturalist involved in Pine Barrens research and restoration for over 20 years.  Ms. Block led the "Sunrise Fire" award-winning writing team made up of professional writers, firefighters and ecologists and was determined to introduce young readers to the ecology of the Long Island Pine Barrens and the nature of wildfire.  She also is a trained firefighter with the Port Jefferson Fire Department and has been involved with the US Forest Service Wildfire Task Force in Colorado and here on Long Island.  "We tried to be as authentic to the kind of training that beginning firefighters must have in a community that relies on their local volunteer firefighters and the committment to protect life and property that they have.   It was also important to document the ongoing committment of seasoned firefighters in the many districts that must answer the call of fires in the pine barrens to learn to fight pine barrens fires more effectively and safely and at the same time, become better at protecting the environment."

"Sunrise Fire" is available softcover, perfect bound, 323 pages.  The book includes over 40 photographs that document the conservation behind the story, a map of the pine barrens, character summaries, and a glossary of firefighting terms.

"Sunrise Fire" is a must read for the young and young at heart.  An especially important book for anyone thinking about a career in firefighting or the emergency services and an invaluable lesson in team building and leadership skills.  "Sunrise Fire" is for educators teaching young adults about forestry conservation, fire prevention, and fire safety.
